Custom illustration commissions

Letโ€™s make something wonderfully odd.

Whether you've got a crystal-clear vision or the vague feeling that "it would be really nice if someone drew this", you're in the right place. I love taking half-formed ideas, odd little stories and meaningful moments, then turning them into illustrations with plenty of personality.

Fair warning: I ask a lot of questions before I draw anything. Annoying? Possibly. Tactically useful? Absolutely.

Start with the idea

What shall we make?

Commissions come in all sorts of shapes. Some are personal, some are practical, and some begin with the dangerous phrase, โ€œthis might sound weird, butโ€ฆโ€

โœฆ

For You

Portraits, gifts, pets, characters, inside jokes, and small personal treasures with far too much personality.

Something to keep, frame, or give.
โ—†

For Your Business

Mascots, merchandise artwork, packaging, adverts, product designs, and illustrated bits that make your brand look less beige.

Illustration with a job to do.
โ—

For Creators

Avatars, emotes, channel art, profile images, stream graphics, and other things for your corner of the internet.

For people building a world online.

Not sure which one you are?

Not sure where your idea fits? Don't worry. Most good ideas arrive slightly untidy. Choose the closest option, tell me what you're imagining, and I'll help you work out the rest.

How it usually goes

Tea first. Then drawing.

Every commission is a little different, but the general rhythm is simple: you bring the idea, I ask useful questions, and we slowly turn the thing in your head into something you can actually look at.

You bring the idea.

It can be polished, chaotic, half-formed, or held together with vibes and three reference images.

We have a chat.

Iโ€™ll ask questions, check the details, and make sure I understand what you actually want before I vanish into the drawing cave.

I start sketching.

Youโ€™ll see the idea take shape before the final artwork begins, which is much better than both of us quietly hoping for the best.

We fine tune it.

A few thoughtful tweaks are included, because sometimes an eyebrow is not just an eyebrow. Sometimes it is the entire mood.

I finish everything up.

Once weโ€™re happy, Iโ€™ll prepare the final files and send everything over, ready to use, print, gift, post, or admire dramatically.

About working together

Before we make something together...

I want this to be a good experience for both of us. Here are a few things that tend to make the whole process smoother, kinder, and (dare I say it) actually rather fun.

Licences & usage

So, what can you actually do with your artwork?

Your artwork comes with usage rights that match how you plan to use it. Here's the short version.

Hand-drawn heart

Personal Use

For artwork that's just for you.

Portraits, gifts, profile pictures, and personal projects.

You can print it, frame it, post it online, and generally enjoy the thing you commissioned.

ร—

You can't use it to make money or represent a business.

Hand-drawn computer monitor

Creator Use

For your channels, streams, and communities.

Use your artwork on the creator channels, community, or merchandise it was commissioned for.

โœฆ

If your creator work is monetised, the appropriate commercial usage needs to be included.

Hand-drawn shop front

Commercial Use

For businesses and money-making projects.

Use the artwork for the agreed business purpose, such as branding, packaging, advertising, or merchandise.

Commercial usage is included with Business commissions.

โœฆ

Reselling or redistributing the artwork itself is a different thing entirely.

Not sure which one applies?

Tell me what you're planning to do with the artwork and I'll help you work it out. No licence law degree required.

Read the full licence terms For the full details, examples, and the not-so-fine print.

Frequently asked questions

Questions you may be quietly wondering.

A few of the things people tend to ask before handing me their idea and hoping for the best.

How long will my commission take?

Every commission is a little different. Simpler commissions usually take around 1โ€“2 weeks, while larger or more complex packages may take 6โ€“8 weeks.

I'll let you know when I expect to start your commission once I've reviewed your order and project information.

What happens after I place my order?

You'll receive a PDF that starts the whole process. Inside, you'll find a link to your commission form, where you can send me the information, references, and other useful bits I need to understand your project.

Once I've reviewed everything, I'll get in touch to confirm the details, discuss any paid add-ons you've requested, and let you know when I expect to begin.

Do I need to know exactly what I want?

No. The commission listings contain plenty of information, so take your time and have a browse.

If you're still unsure which option best fits the idea in your head, email me at commissions@gainfulbhaji.com and I'll help you find the right starting point.

What reference images should I send?

Please send clear images of any people or pets I'll be drawing. You can also include colour palettes, visual references, objects, clothing, moods, or anything else that inspires you and you'd like represented in the finished piece.

More useful information is generally better. I would much rather receive twelve reference images than attempt to develop telepathy halfway through the sketch.

Can I ask for changes?

Yes. You'll have up to three rounds of revisions during the sketch stage, which is when larger changes should be made.

Once the artwork has moved into its final stages, only minor changes can be made, such as adjusting the colour of a shirt. Larger changes at this point may require an additional fee, so please give me as much useful information as possible in your commission form.

What if I need my artwork by a specific date?

Please email me at commissions@gainfulbhaji.com before purchasing. I'll check my availability and let you know whether I can accommodate your deadline.

Rush orders may incur an additional charge depending on the commission and turnaround required.

Will I receive a physical product?

Not currently. All commissioned artwork is delivered digitally.

I do plan to offer physical canvas printing as an optional add-on in the future, but for now, no mysterious parcel will arrive at your door.

Can you draw something that isn't listed here?

Maybe.

I'm always open to hearing an interesting idea, so email me at commissions@gainfulbhaji.com and tell me what you're imagining. If it's something I can help with, we'll work out the best way forward.

Can I use my artwork commercially?

Sometimes. It depends on the commission you purchase and what you plan to do with the artwork.

I've put together a full licences and usage page explaining the different types of usage and what applies to each commission.

If you're still unsure, ask before purchasing and I'll help you work it out.

Can you keep my commission private?

Absolutely. I often share my drawing process and finished work online, but you can ask me not to share your commission.

You can also request that I keep the artwork private until a particular date, which is useful for gifts, launches, and other things that shouldn't be accidentally spoiled by an enthusiastic Instagram post.

There's a section for this in your commission form.

What happens if I change my mind or need to cancel?

Please let me know as soon as possible.

If you cancel before I've started work on your commission, I can offer a full refund. If work has already begun, a partial refund may be available depending on how much of the commission has been completed.

Refunds are not offered for fully completed custom artwork.

Ready when you are

Fancy making something wonderfully odd?

You've met me, peeked at the process, survived the corkboard, and hopefully found a commission that feels right.

Choose the kind of project you're looking for and I'll point you back towards the right options. Still unsure? Send me an email and tell me what's rattling around in your head.

Still scratching your head?

Email me at commissions@gainfulbhaji.com and tell me about your idea.

Vague thoughts, questionable sketches, and excessive reference images welcome.
